Master Sgt. (retired) Merrill Peck "Mert" Bonwell, 60, of Lawton, Okla., died Thursday, Oct. 11, in Lawton. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawton, with the Rev. William F. Todd and the Rev. Phil Jones officiating. Burial with military honors will be at a later date in Ames

Merrill Peck "Mert" Bonwell was born Feb. 14, 1947, in Fort Lewis, Wash., to Clyde and Pauline Bonwell. He attended schools in Ames and was a graduate of Ames High School. He later attended Iowa State University and was a graduate of Cameron University.

He retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Sill after 22 years of service. He was a veteran of Vietnam and had been stationed in Germany and Korea. Following his retirement from the Army he worked for Military Service Company.

He married Marlene Lee Dec. 19, 1970, in Ames.

He was a member of the Ames High School Alumni Association, the Cameron Alumni Association, a life member of American Legion Post 37 in Ames and 40 et 8 Voiture No. 285 in Ames. He served on the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Board. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and had served on the church administrative board, the council on ministries, the missions committee and was a past president of United Methodist Men.

He is survived by his wife, of Lawton, Okla.; and one son, Patrick Bonwell, of Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
