Paul Hakes, 81, of Nevada, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, at home. Memorial services are pending with Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services in Nevada.

Paul Chester Hakes, 81, of Nevada, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, at his home. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Paul Chester Hakes was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Ames, to Ralph M. and Stella (Ballard) Hakes. He attended North Grant School and graduated in 1943 from Nevada High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Mary Mildred Ugolini July 7, 1946, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. He was a farmer and also was employed with the Department of Transportation.
He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and the Nevada V.F.W. He loved watching his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities. He also enjoyed bowling on the Scudder bowling team, playing poker, boating and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hakes, of Nevada; two sons, Mark (Marlene) Hakes, of Nevada, and David (Carolyn) Hakes, of Cedar Falls; a son-in-law, Donald Manning, of Granger; six grandchildren, Valerie Craven, Tony Hakes, Matt Leu, Morgan Parkhurst, Madelyn Hakes and Rachel Hakes; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa Craven, Justin Leu, and Tyler, Kaity and Kassy Hakes; and one nephew, Gary (Sally), Scott, of Lincoln, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Chris Manning, on March 13, 2000.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada.
A memorial fund for Paul has been established.
Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
