Lewis A. Baer, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at Northcrest Community in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Waukee United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation with his family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church.

Lewis A. Baer was born March 28, 1921, on the family farm in Cedar County. He met his wife, Avalon Seiberling, on the bus while attending school at Tipton They were married one week short of 64 years.

He graduated from Tipton Junior College and Iowa State University. At ISU, his class started the AG ED 450 farm. He taught high school agriculture and sponsored Future Farmers of America in Keota and Waukee. He also taught night school and offered agricultural classes at the prison farm, now the Iowa Living History Farm. He owned Baer Ag Supply and Waukee Feed and Grain in Waukee. He was a leader and an innovator in soil conservation practices, fertilizer and chemical applications, soil testing and planting methods.

He served on the school board, town council and was a lay leader at church. He was a Mason. He mentored young ag students from around the world and provided leadership for a number of local and state organizations.

Every summer, he took his family on a two-week car trip. He loved exploring new territory and looking at the crops along the way.

He is survived by his wife, Avalon; two daughters, Carol (Bob) Wolfe, of Fort Dodge, and Janet (Rich) Toering, of Ames; three grandchildren, John (Jennifer) Wolfe, of Fort Dodge, Elizabeth Wolfe, of Greeley, Colo., and Ryan Anderson, of Ames; and one great-grandson, Mason Wolfe, of Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Pearl Baer; and his sisters, Dorothy Anderson (Ames) and Eloise Smith (Rock Island, Ill.).

Memorial contributions may be made to Waukee United Methodist Church.

Brandt Funeral Home of Dallas Center is in charge of arrangements.
