Velta Marie "Vel" Carroll, 79, of Rochester, Minn., died Thursday, Aug. 30, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester following a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 29, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2207 11th Ave. SE, in Rochester, with the Rev. Brian Kom officiating. Friends may call an hour before the service at the church.

Velta Marie Stephens was born July 20, 1928, in Delphos. She married Don Highland in 1947 in Des Moines. She married Robert Carroll in 1968 in Hopkins, Minn. She married Robert Ziska July 11, 1981, in Nashua.

She lived in Fairmont, Minn., from 1953 to 1968. She and Bob Carroll resided in Hopkins and Excelsior, Minn., from 1968 to 1978. She had lived in Rochester since 1982.

She was a secretary for Rieke, Carroll, Muller Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors, from 1967 to 1980. She also worked as a receptionist at Marquette Bank in downtown Rochester from 1982 to 1995. Her husband, Bob Ziska, worked for IBM for 35 years.

She was a member of Mrs. Jaycees and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Fairmont, Minn.

She loved her family and friends unconditionally. She enjoyed dancing, harness and horseracing, watching NASCAR with her sister, Rosy, and fishing. She also enjoyed visiting with her neighbors, taking care of her flowers and watching the birds, especially a white dove that just recently had started visiting her feeder.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Ziska; five children, Gary (Lael Luedtke) Highland, of Fairmont, Minn., Diane Highland, of Denver, Donna (Steve) Sell, of Sandstone, Minn., Scot Highland, of Fairmont, Minn., and Kevin (Ingrid) Highland, of Excelsior, Minn.; four stepchildren, Mike (Andrea) Carroll, of Edina, Minn., Cathy Carroll, of Portland, Ore., Dave (Nancy) Carroll, of Castlerock, Colo., and Jim (Mary) Carroll, of Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren, Gary's son, Cory Highland, Scot's daughter, Adrianna Highland, and Kevin and Ingrid's sons, Dan and Evan Highland; two brothers, Roland (Ann) Stephens, of Boone, and Rick (Liz) Stephens, of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and two sisters, Rosy Nelson, of Ames, and Marilyn (Tom) Mulanix, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, one brother and one sister.

Macken Funeral Home of Rochester, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
