Howard E. "Mike" Beal, 89, of Nevada, died Friday, Aug. 24, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames, with Pastor Randy Abell officiating. A luncheon will follow immediately after the committal service at Heartland Baptist Church, 2722 White Oak Drive, in Ames.

Mike Beal was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Nevada, to James and Carrie Irene (Myers) Beal. He was a 1935 graduate of Nevada High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Carolyn J. Greer June 2, 1940, in Nevada. He retired in 1982 from Iowa Electric-Alliant Energy. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nevada, 60-year member of the William F. Ball American Legion and the V.F.W. He enjoyed watching sports on TV, especially race car competitions, and attending the Iowa State Fair.

He is survived by one daughter, Madora Jo (Brian) Procter, of South Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada; one son, Michael D. (Arlene) Beal, of Ames; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Bill Spencer; his wife, Carolyn on July 11, 1998; one granddaughter, Lynn Marie Beal; and nine brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in his name for Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
