Van C. Volkens, 60, passed away Monday, Aug. 20, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 24, at the Goettsch-Perrin Funeral Home in Gladbrook, with Rev. Mike Johnson officiating. A public visitation was Thursday, Aug. 23, at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the funeral homes Web site at www.purseldavis.com
Van C. Volkens was born in Marshalltown on Aug. 1, 1947, the son of Harold (Duke) and Helen (Allard) Volkens. He graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1965 and received his AA degree from Marshalltown Community College. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1967 and worked as a payroll clerk with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class, receiving an honorable discharge in 1972. He was employed at Fisher Controls International for 39 years, most recently as a Senior Business Systems Analyst.
He enjoyed trains and listening to blues and jazz. He was learning to play the guitar. He enjoyed the performing arts and volunteered at the Octagon Arts Festival. Van enjoyed photography and took pleasure in creating fantastic meals. He took pride in grooming his yard and doing household projects. He loved his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Barber, of Ames; a brother, Bruce (Tara), of Bellevue, Wash.; two sisters, Kathy (Kent) Conover, of Kingsley, and Patrice (Mark) Steinke, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; a step-daughter, Kelly (Jose) Calderon, of Marshalltown; 12 nieces and nephews; nine great nieces and nephews; and two step-grandchildren, Sonya and Jasmin Calderon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Brandi.
