Ruth McCowan Bremer, 91, formerly of Ames, died Thursday, Aug. 23, of congestive heart failure at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Ames. A private family interment ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Clarinda Cemetery in Clarinda.

Ruth McCowan Bremer was born Dec. 5, 1915, on a farm in Clarinda. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1933 and regularly attended their reunions. She was married to Wayne J. Bremer, who preceded her in death in 1974.

She worked as a PBX telephone operator at Farmer's Mutual Telephone Co., Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., and worked at the switchboard for the Hotel Kirkwood and Warner Bros. Motion Pictures in Des Moines during WWII. She later returned to this career, and served for 13 years with the Communications Services Department at Iowa State University before her retirement in 1985.

She was an active member of St. Cecelia's Parish in Ames. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Mary's Circle Rosary Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cyclone Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and Beta Sigma Phi of Ames. She enjoyed the companionship of her neighbors at Windsor Oaks, and all of the social activities and events there.

She is survived by countless friends in the St. Cecelia and Ames communities and also by her sister-in-law, Adrienne Bremer; nieces, Terry Allison, Celeste Bremer, Marie Brannon and Carol Revers; and nephew, Jim McCowan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne; one brother; and two nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Ames.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Cecelia's Building Fund.

Fredregill Funeral Home is Zearing is handling the arrangements.
