Daniel E. "Gene" Spencer, 82, of Nevada, died Saturday, July 21, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.
Daniel E. "Gene" Spencer was born Sept. 24, 1924, to Thaddeus S. and Ona (Blair) Spencer, of Afton, and graduated from Afton High School. He attended Parsons College and Montana State before becoming a Purple Heart Veteran while serving in France in WWII. He married Maxine Marshall, of Clarion, May 23, 1947. Gene was a former Story County Treasurer and retired as an accountant from Iowa State University Business Office. Gene was a 50-year member of the Nevada Masonic Lodge, Nevada Lions Club, American Legion William F. Ball Post No. 48, of Nevada, and an Elder and served for many years at the Presbyterian Church in Nevada.
Gene enjoyed his family and church, fishing, travel and gardening. He will be remembered as a loving husband, supportive father, fun grandfather and great friend. Gene will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maxine; one son, Dan Jr. (Deb), of Nevada; one daughter, Julie Book, of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Ethan (Becca) Book, of Knoxville, and Eric Spencer, of Nevada; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several brothers- and sisters-in-law, Logan Gerheim, Marilyn Marshall, Daryl Marshall, Betty and Rich Fibikar, Theresa and Carl Hollebrands, Kay Marshall, Mary Ann and Al Gathman, Duane and Inez Hanig, Phyllis and Daryl Zwiefel; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thaddeus; and four sisters, Charlotte Smith, Ruth Morrow, Margaret Miller and Kathleen Gerheim.
Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
