THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, June 30, 2007.
William Early, 93, of Creston, died Thursday, June 28, at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 2, at Coen-Beaty-Pearson Funeral Service of Creston, with the Rev. Daniel Moore of Cromwell Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell.
William Early was born Dec. 18, 1913, near Afton, to Frank Connell Early and Bessie Edith (Stewart) Early. He lived all of his life in Union County. As a child, he was raised northeast of Afton on a farm and became interested in livestock. He attended school and graduated from Afton High School. His father, Frank, lost an arm in an accident and affectionately referred to Bill as "his right-hand man."
He married Elma M. Hartsook Dec. 25, 1940, near Kimball in western Nebraska. After their marriage, Bill and Elma farmed south of Shannon City. Later, about 1955, they farmed west of Creston. In the late 1960s, they moved to his current farm where they raised Angus cattle. He loved to hunt and trap. Elma and Bill loved to square dance and attended many dances on Saturday nights. He was very proud of Elma and her teaching career.
He is survived by his twin children, daughter, Jan Holsman, of Ames, and son, Jon Early, of Creston; and one sister, Maxine Robinson, of Wheatland, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elma, in 2001; three brothers, Paul, Jim and Gene Early; and one sister, Madelyn Ruckman.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 1, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
