Charles Neal, 86, of Ames, died Tuesday, May 15, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, at First Christian Church in Ames with Pastor David Digby officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Charles Neal was born April 19, 1921, in Moorhead, to Fern Douglas and Mary Adelaide (Skow) Neal. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1939. He then attended Grand Island (Neb.) Business College.

He married Mary Jane Rouse Sept. 27, 1942. She died Dec. 23, 1974. He later married Diane Hoover June 15, 1996. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and worshiped for 56 years with the congregation in Ames.

He was the second person hired as a fulltime employee with Hach Company in Ames and continued there until his retirement 32 years later. He was a devoted family man, an avid golfer, gardener and traveler.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Neal, of Ames; four sons, Walter (Vicki) Neal, of Ames, William (Cheryl) Neal, of Buffalo, Minn., Gerald (Patricia) Neal, of Winona, Minn., and James (Carol Tidwell) Neal, of Maple Grove, Minn.; stepson, Dennis (Barbara) Hoover, of Pleasant Hill; 11 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and one sister, Genevieve Neal, of Seattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two sisters; and his first wife, Mary Jane.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Memorial contributions may be directed to First Christian Church in Ames.
