Earl William Everett Brown, 73, of Ames, died Monday, April 16, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A time of gathering and celebration will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

Earl William Everett Brown was born May 17, 1933, in Gilbert, the son of Milt and Edna Brown. He attended Gilbert Consolidated School. He married Elaine Rowe Feb. 21, 1953, in Ames. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from April 20, 1953, to April 2, 1955. He was a lifelong resident of Gilbert and the rural Gilbert area.

He worked with his brother, Jim, to develop the "Gilbert Corner," first opening the Texaco Station where Casey's now stands, then a year later opening the DX Station and Restaurant on the northeast corner of the intersection.

He was the shop foreman for Manatt's (formerly Iowa Road Builders), retiring in 1995 with more than 20 years of service. After retirement, he and Elaine enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Canada and visiting family. He was an avid outdoorsman, sharing his passion for hunting, fishing, hiking and camping with many family members and friends. He was an advocate for conservation; he and Elaine volunteered countless hours to Story County Conservation.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; four children, Karol Brown, of Bixby, Okla., Michael (Theresa) Brown, of Nevada, Joanne (Tom) Isenhart, of rural Ames, and Barbara (Tom) Goldsby, of Littleton, Colo., nine grandchildren, Jessica (Dekenon) Page, of Broken Arrow, Okla., Stephanie West, of Owasso, Okla., and Chelsea Clifton, of Bixby, Okla., Chris Brown, of Ames, Nikki Rowan, of Iowa City, Nici and Beau Goldsby, of Littleton, Colo., and Clare and Serine Isenhart, of rural Ames; two great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Chanelle Page, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sisters, Leona McKee, of Ames, and Rachel Weigel, of Gravois Mills, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, Story Pheasants Forever and the Story County Conservation in memory of Earl Brown.

Bacon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
