James Speck, 85, of Ames, died Tuesday, April 10, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Funeral services are pending with Adams Funeral Home.

James Hurlock Speck, 89, of Ames, died Tuesday, April 10. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Adams Funeral Home.

James H. Speck was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Ames, to Helen Maude and James Edward Speck. He attended North Star School, Ames High and Iowa State College. He was born on the home place and began farming at a young age. He married Edna Petersen in 1941, and they began their home in a farmhouse where Northwood School is today. He was a master horseman, cattle breeder and innovator who could find a way to repair almost anything. He was a strong, diligent man who always had work to do, sometimes from sunrise to sunrise. He enjoyed fishing in Canada both summer and winter.

After retiring from farming, he was employed by Cooper's Mill and Asgrow Seed. After retirement, he collected and restored antique tools. He was a good husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed and always fondly remembered.

He is survived by two children, Dianna (Terry) Hurless, of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Mark (Linda) Speck, of Ames; grandchildren, Erik Hurless, Josh (Julie) Speck and Alyssa (Charlie) Evertz; and one sister, Mary Ford, of Stratford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; one grandson, Nathan James Speck; his parents; and siblings, Gordon, Clara, Gerry, Walter, Roberta, Betty and Johnny.
