Daniel L. Griffen Jr., 79, died Monday, March 26. A memorial service will be at a later date at St. Johns By the Campus Episcopal Church.

Dan was born July 13, 1927, in Sioux City, to Daniel Leonard Griffen and Maryann Griffen. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II before attending Iowa State University.

He received a bachelor's degree in engineering from ISU (1950), a juris doctorate in law from Drake University (1953) and a master's degree in engineering valuation from ISU (1961).

He was a professor of industrial engineering at ISU and was the executive director of the ISU Research Foundation from 1962 to 1989, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Story County and American Bar associations and the American Society for Engineering Education. He also was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Iowa Patent Law Association. He was a founding member of the Licensing Executives Society. He was a member of a number of university and community groups, and was a member of Rotary.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; six children and their spouses, D. Leonard (Susan), Paul M. (Ellen), Scott, Riley (Genelle), Kathryn (Lachlan Smith) and Beth. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Will, Ben, Luke, Josh, Stephanie, Katie, Chas, Jeffry, Michaela, Bevin, Sean, Daniel, Mackenzie and Dominic; and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Addysen.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; one son, Jeffry; one daughter, Laurie; and his first wife, Kathryn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Parkinson's Disease Association Inc., 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.

Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
