Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, in Sanborn Memorial Chapel at Madrid Home, where the family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday. Burial will be in Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid.
Ruth Claire (Cederquist) Larson was born March 27, 1918, in Madrid, to C.J. and Clara Bork Cederquist. Her father, nicknamed "Ceder," was an attorney who practiced in Madrid, raising four daughters during the great Depression. Ruth, the youngest and somewhat of a tomboy, was Madrid's Midsummer Queen in 1937. She attended Boone Junior College and the University of Iowa. She worked for the City State Bank and married Homer K. Larson in 1940. Her husband was drafted at the onset of World War II, served until asthma led to a discharge and a move to Arizona to recover. Once the outcome of the war seemed certain, they started their family and returned to Madrid.
She worked with her husband as a bookkeeper for the Larson Agency for decades. She had many interests, including gardening, music, travel, Iowa State athletics, investments, antiques and fishing. She also worked to pass on the family's Swedish traditions, a healthy work ethic and value of education and family. Her sense of humor persisted over the course of her 88 years.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by one son, John Walter Larson and his wife, Diane, of Des Moines; one daughter, Linda Larson Melin and her husband, Fred, of Madrid; six grandchildren, Christopher Larson and his wife, Joanne, Jonathan Larson and Benjamin Larson, all of California, John F. Melin, of Florida, Kristin A. Melin, of New York, and Melissa Ruth Hudnall and her husband, Chris, of Madrid; one great-granddaughter, Emma Ruth Hudnall; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Larson, in 1993; and three sisters, Tekla Olson, Esther Rogers and Dr. Dena Cederquist in 2006.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Madrid Home.
Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid is in charge of arrangements.
