William (Bill) H. Abbott, 83, of Ames, formerly of Roland, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Israel Family Hospice House. He deeded his body to the University of Iowa, and a memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Adams Funeral Home.

William (Bill) H. Abbott was born Dec. 26, 1923, in Denver, Colo., to Francis and Ethel Abbott. He married Violet Hinkel, and they later divorced. He married Joan Helland, of Roland, in May 1987.

He was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church, former RSVP board member, former Heartland volunteer driver and former Roland First Responder. He was a member of the Roland American Legion, VFW and 40 & 8. He served in both the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Graphic Forms in Nevada.

He is survived by three children, Diane (Hap) Berry, of Murray, John (Kathy) Abbott, of Conway, Ark., and Carol (Stan) Becvar, of Nevada; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one, sister Fran Hopkins, of Westminster, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan, in 1994; one brother, Bob; one sister, Helen; and one great-granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated for Israel Family Hospice House or Heartland Senior Center.
