Mikhail P. "Misha" Kern, 24, of Story City, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in San Francisco, where he was attending Academy of the Arts University. Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Mikhail Pavlovich Kern died suddenly Feb. 6, while attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Calif. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Saint Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.

Mikhail Pavlovich Kern was born Sept. 8, 1982, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Paul and Anne Marie (Munsen) Kern. Known as Misha to his friends and family, he moved to Story City at the age of three. He graduated from Roland-Story High School in 2001. Over the next few years he worked at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, modeled in Milan, Italy, attended the University of Iowa, and earned an associate's degree from Des Moines Area Community College in 2006.

Mikhail was very close to his only brother, Roald, and they enjoyed traveling together throughout Italy, Switzerland, Brazil and Japan. Mikhail had many dreams and a strong determination for life. He was deeply loved and will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and his cat, Moon.

Surviving Mikhail are his mother, Anne Marie Kern, of Story City; brother, Roald Kern, of Japan; grandparents, Richard and Katherine Munsen, of Story City; aunts; uncles; and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his father, Paul on Dec. 23, 1985; and his uncle, Lt. Craig Munsen, USN, on Aug. 9, 1996.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Mikhail's mother, Anne Marie, requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Mikhail Kern Memorial Contribution, Academy of Art University Foundation, Box 36, Story City, IA 50248. Because of Misha's passion for the environment and love of animals, you may also donate to your local animal shelter or charity of your choice.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City is handling the arrangements.
