Mary Anne Reed, 59, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Dec. 22, at University Hospitals in Iowa City from a hemorrhagic stroke. She had deeded her body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Memorial services were Dec. 27 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.

Mary Anne Reed was born Nov. 16, 1947, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Eugene and Pauline (Tolan) Rodenborn. She grew up in Fort Dodge and graduated from Ames High School in 1966. She was a graduate of Buena Vista College with a bachelor's degree in physical education, and a graduate of Iowa State University with a master's degree in elementary guidance counseling.

She began her career as a physical education teacher and coach in Coon Rapids. After obtaining a master's degree, she became a rehabilitation counselor for the state of Iowa based out of Fort Dodge. She met and married her husband Barry Reed in 1976 and moved to Cedar Rapids. She became an elementary counselor in the Catholic school system for two years and then became a counselor for the Cedar Rapids School District for 13 years, retiring in 1991 because of complications of multiple sclerosis. While with the Cedar Rapids School District, she worked at Adams, Polk, Wright, Hoover and Grant elementary schools.

Since retiring, she had been active in helping others, particularly in visiting the elderly in care centers and counseling persons with multiple sclerosis. She was very active in keeping in touch with many friends and relatives across the country through e-mail and was an inspiration to all those whose lives she touched. She also was active in church activities, particularly First Church of the Nazarene and St. Mark's Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Barry Reed, of Cedar Rapids, her brother, Tom (Jeanie) Rodenborn, of Rutledge, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Joyce Rodenborn, of Harlan; stepmother, Fern Rodenborn, of Fort Dodge; stepsister, Nancy Collier, of Euless, Texas; stepbrother, Brian (Marcia) Johnson, of Dana Point, Calif.; half-brother, Alan Rodenborn, of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law, Linda (Gary) Fink, of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Sharon (John) Shepard, of Kingwood, Texas; aunts Mickey Burch, of Lakewood, N.M., Margie Rodenborn, of Fort Dodge, and Laura Tilton, of Cathedral City, Calif.; uncles Don Rodenborn, of Rockwell City, Bill Rodenborn, of San Diego, and Jim Rodenborn, of Orangesburg, S.C.; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and her special friend, Audrey Carney, of Ames, who helped raise her after the untimely death of her mother.

She was preceded in death by parents and one brother, William Rodenborn.

Memorials may be directed to Miracles in Motion, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, First Church of the Nazarene, or St. Mark's Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
