Warren B. Sargent, 90, of Ames, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of the pending funeral arrangements.

Warren B. Sargent, 90, of Ames, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at United Church of Christ, Congregational in Ames. A visitation will precede the service at 1 p.m. and a reception will follow the service.

Warren B. Sargent was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Des Moines to Bert and Opal Sargent. He was a graduate of East High School in Des Moines and Iowa State College in civil engineering. He married Margaret Morgan in 1939. They had a daughter and three sons. He was a captain in the U.S. Army and served in the Corps of Engineers in New Guinea and Australia during World War II. He worked at Kimberly Clark in Wisconsin and Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel and Hammond Iron Works in Pennsylvania before returning to Iowa and co-founding Todd and Sargent Inc. in Ames in 1958.

During high school and college, he was a champion pole vaulter. Throughout his adult life, he was an accomplished pilot, skier and photographer and enjoyed golf and traveling.

His many achievements and affiliations include Sigma Chi fraternity, Tau Beta Pi engineering honorary fraternity, Kiwanis, Order of the Knoll and United Church of Christ, Congregational. He also actively served on the board of the Octagon, as a member of the board that established Ames' first sister city relationship with Loja, Ecuador, as president of the Iowa Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors and as campaign chair for United Way of Story County.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Karns Sargent, of Ames; one daughter, Ann (Robert) Samuels, of St. Louis, Mo.; three sons, Lee (Sherry) Sargent, Philip (Susan) Sargent and Dan (Pamela) Sargent, all of Ames; stepchildren, Cherie (Wayne) Allcott, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Michael (Donna) Karns, of Great Falls, Mont., Patrick Karns, of Great Falls, Mont., Mary (Sigi) Mattern, of Ocean Shores, Wash., Caroline (Tommy) Chang, of Hayward, Calif., and Jacque Klas, of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Ben Samuels, Liz (Matt) Willey, Lindsay Sargent, Jennifer (John) Peckham, Jonathan Sargent, Amy Sargent and Katherine Sargent; step-grandchildren, Ann Berlin, Beth Allcott, Chad Karns, Cari Karns, Andrew Nelson, Lauri Khoshrozeh, Tracy Chang, Seth Lacey, Noah Lacey and Rose Lacey; great-grandchildren, Jack Warren Willey and Azbey Marie Peckham; and step great-grandchildren, William Michael Lanphear, Juliette Khoshrozeh, Anthony Khoshrozeh, Maija Nelson and Nathan Nelson.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Marguerite Rogerson, of Des Moines, Vivian Williams, of Patterson, Calif., Eloise (Bob) Frampton, Robert Sargent, Jack Sargent and Lucile (Russell) Johnson, all of Des Moines; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret Morgan Sargent and Jean Vieth Sargent; and two grandchildren, Kurt Sargent and Michelle Sargent.

Memorials may be directed to The Octagon Renovation Campaign, United Church of Christ, Congregational or Youth and Shelter Services.

Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of arrangements.
