The community was shocked Monday when it was announced that John Lanning had died at 4:30 in the afternoon. While the passing of this well known citizen was not wholly unexpected, he having been ailing for some weeks and seriously ill for the past few days, yet it came as a shock to his neighbors and friends. John Wesley Lanning was born in Jackson County, Indiana, September 10, 1841 and died at his home on Boone Street, Monday, December 9th, 1912 at 4:30 p.m. He was the son of Lewis Lanning and Lana Wilson. Deceased came to Iowa in 1843 locating in Iowa County, moved to Ames in 1880, where he engaged in the milling business, in which line of work he continued up to the time of his demise. While of a retiring disposition, Mr Lanning was always active in the affairs of the community, having been a member of the city council for four terms, eight years, was a member of the Methodist church forty years, and a charter member of Ames Lodge IOOF. Deceased was the sixth in a family of eleven children, three sisters survive him, Mrs C. E. Haverly of Ames, Mrs M. T., Wilkinson of Summers, Iowa and Mrs Alvirah Richardson of Oxford, Ohio, was united in marriage to Elizabeth Marcellus February 13, 1862 who passed away before him November 23, 1912. He was the father of eight chldren, three dying in infancy, four daughters and one son survive. John Lanning was one of the really good men of the community, honest, upright and a most excellent citizen. From his natural retiring idposition mamy people did not know him but his close friends have nothing but words of praise for the noble character of this good man now gone before. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Minchine (the M.E. pator being ill) at the family home on Boone street at 2:30 o'clock today, and remains escorted to the last resting place by the Odd Fellows.
