The very sudden passing of Frank L. Haverly on last Thursday night brought to a close the life of one of Ames' best known citizens, a gentle and kindly man devoted to those near him and loyal to his friends. In him, confidences were never misplaced and selfishness had no part in his make-up. Apparently robust in health, even those closest to him did not realize his true condition of health, and his untimely death comes as a severe blow to family and friends. Frank Lewis Haverly was born on a farm in Iowa County May 24, 1867, being the eldest son of Charles E and Sarah Haverly, was fifty two years old at the time of his death. He came with his family to Ames in 1878 when a boy of eleven years and since that time has almost continuously been a resident of this city. He attended the public schools and graduated from the high school with the class of 1885. Following his graduation he began teaching in the schools of the county and continued in the profession of twenty years, for a number of years being connected with the schools of Webster and Calhoun counties. He was superintendent of the schools at Farnhamville, Iowa for several years. About ten years ago he entered in the transer business here with his brother, Harry C. Haverly and continued this till his death. For the business alone, on account of the failing health of his brother to whom he was devoted and during the years of Harry's invalidism, Frank has cared for him as only an older brother could do. Truly the life of Frank Haverly has been unselfishly devoted to others. He is survived by his father, two brothers, Harry C. and John W. and three sisters, Mrs. Elmer Coffin, Mrs Ben Nelson, of this city, and Mrs Bertha Foster of Grand Junction, Colorado. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the home of Mrs Elmer Coffin, under the direction of the IOOF of which he was a member.
