Marvin LeRoy Stakey, 80, formerly of Stratford, died Saturday, Oct.14, at Bethany Manor in Story City. The body has been cremated. Interment of the cremains will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in South Marion Cemetery south of Stratford. A celebration of life will follow the interment service at 11 a.m. at Stratford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joe Lambert officiating and flag presentation by the Frederick Sonksen Post No. 576 of Stratford.

Marvin was born on May 11, 1926, the son of LeRoy and Bertha (Slezak) Stakey. He married Shirley Johnson March 13, 1960. He graduated from Massena High School in 1943. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country during World War II from 1944-46. He returned to Massena and was engaged in farming. The couple farmed at Massena before moving to Stratford in 1962, where Marvin was co-owner of Stratford Implement, an International Harvester dealership, until he retired. The couple moved to Story City in 2002.

He was a member of Stratford Lutheran Church, Stratford Lions Club and the American Legion.

He enjoyed camping with his family, woodworking, watching sports, hunting, and refereeing football and basketball games. He enjoyed working with youth serving as a 4-H leader and helping with organization and community activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leonard and Clara Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one daughter, Lori (Dick) Grimoskas, of Tipton; one son, Doran (Cathy) Stakey, of Kamrar; grandchildren, Nicholas, Eric and Kristin Grimoskas and Jessica and Courtney Stakey; one brother, Leo (Helen) Stakey, of Massena; one sister, Pauline (Louis) Frank, of Bettendorf; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at Stratford Lutheran Church with the family present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Senior Services Adult Day Care, Stratford Lutheran Church or the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
