Jean Gavronsky Cook, 79, died Monday, Sept. 18, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines after a long illness. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Centerville. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Ames Jewish Congregation.Jean Gavronsky Cook was born April 28, 1927, in Centerville. After graduating from Centerville High in 1945, she earned degrees at University of Iowa and University of Oklahoma. As a professor at Iowa State University, she ran the serials department at Parks Library for many years. She was active in library organizations and the Ames Jewish Congregation.
She is survived by three daughters and five granddaughters, Elizabeth Jensen (Robert), of Austin, Texas, Jennifer Cook (John Kisner and granddaughters Mollie and Zoe), of Windsor Heights, and Amy Porter (Paul and granddaughters Sara, Hannah and Danelle), of Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bertha Gavronsky; her siblings, Oscar Gavronsky and Shirley Nides; and one son, James, who died in infancy.
Memorials may be made to Ames Jewish Congregation or Hospice of Central Iowa.
