Magdalen Catherine Nockels Walsh, 97, of Ames, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, of congestive heart failure at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames with Father Terry Rassmussen and Father Ivan Nienhaus co-celebrating. The body was cremated. Internment will be directly after the funeral mass and before the funeral luncheon at the church.Magdalen Walsh was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Calmar to Frank and Mary Busch Nockels. She graduated from Cates Business College in Waterloo before moving to Ames in 1928. She then worked at Iowa State University in the office of the vice president. She later worked in the purchasing department of the Department of Transportation and the Ames city assessor's office.
She married Mark Walsh, an attorney in Ames, in 1932. She was a member of the St. Cecilia Altar and Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and a former member of the Theta Chi Sorority.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Howe, of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Carole Anne Stevens, of Ames; two daughters-in-law, Sunny Walsh, of Lawrence, Kan., and Donna Walsh, of Simi Valley, Calif.; one brother, Don Nockels, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; two sons, Robert and Don; and one granddaughter, Sheila Walsh.
A rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Cecilia Catholic Church or to Israel Family Hospice House.
Stevens Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
