Mary K. Bullard

Mary K. Bullard, 92, formerly of Maxwell, died Sunday, September 3, 2006, at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. She died from congestive heart failure, peacefully with family at her side.

Mary was born August 21, 1914, on the family farm near Collins, Iowa, to Charles Henry Kimberley and Daisy Pearl Nowning. Her given name was Daisy Mary. She was united in marriage to Stanley Coolidge Bullard on January 4, 1943.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Coolidge Bullard in 1960, and her daughter, Margaret Lewman and son in law, Terry Lewman, and granddaughters, Cindy and Tammy Lewman in 1983. She also was preceded in death by her younger brothers, George, William and Charles Kimberley, and niece Patricia Kimberley.

Mary attended Pleasant Grove, a one room country school, and Collins Junior and Senior High School, graduating in 1932. She attended Simpson College and Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) graduating in 1938 in journalism and home economics. Mary was a home supervisor for the Farm Security Administration under the Department of Agriculture, teaching farm women how to manage financially by canning and budgeting. She was transferred to Indianapolis, Indiana. Mary later did surveys for Wallace's Farmer and some free lance writing. Mary worked at Iowa State University for 20 years in the information department working on the faculty newsletter.

Mary loved traveling and made trips to Cuba, Europe, Mexico, Nova Scotia, Hawaii, Alaska and the Rocky Mountains. She visited nearly every state. She took her children on many memorable vacations. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing letters to family and new and old friends. She started a round robin letter in 1938 and it continued to circulate among her college friends for 59 years. She helped compile the Maxwell Centennial Book in 1983. She also sponsored a needy child through the Christian Children's Fun for 30 years.

After nearly 85 years in Iowa, Mary moved with her family to Texas, then after 5 years moved again to live with her daughter, Virginia Millard, in Connecticut.

Mary is survived by her son, Charles Bullard (Ann) in The Woodlands, Texas, and daughter, Virginia Millard (Darrel) in Voluntown, Connecticut, grandchildren Matthew Bullard (Paula), Laura Gold (Steve), Andrew Millard (Angie) and Angela Chabot (Chris), and great grandchildren Sara and A.J. Bullard, and Alexandra Chabot, and by sisters in law Mildred and Evelyn Kimberley.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 7, from 6 to 8:30 P.M. at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Services will be 10 A.M, Friday, September 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the First Presbyterian Church at 212 Main Street in Maxwell, Iowa 50161.
