THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, June 2, 2006.
Pearl Marie Smay died Wednesday, May 31, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Oakland Christian Church.
She was born Feb. 27, 1913, in Competition, Mo., to Walter and Myrtle Barnett. As a teenager she moved with her family to Oakland, where she graduated from Oakland High School in 1932. In 1934, she married Wallace Smay of Oakland. They moved to Bushton, Kan., in 1941, and returned to Oakland in 1945, living there until 1996 when they moved to Madrid. After he died in 1997, she moved to Bickford Cottage in Ames in 2004, residing there until her death.
She is survived by one sister, Blanche Glass of Springfield, Mo.; two children, Terry Smay (Sherry) of Ames and Linda Junkins (Lowell) of Donnellson; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven brothers (Marvin, Otis, Wayne, Hurley, Paris, Walter Jr. and Gorman); and three sisters (Faye, Edith and Jewel).
She will be remembered for her unwavering loyalty to her family and friends, for the limitless love and support she gave to her children and grandchildren, for her sense of humor and love of sometimes naughty jokes and for countless acts of sacrifice and hard work she performed during her life. She was a master walleye fisherman and may hold the world record for canning tomato juice and freezing sweet corn. She was a tower of strength and an example for us all.
The following poem (author unknown) summarizes her family's feelings about Pearl's passing:
God looked around his garden and He found an empty space.
He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful; He always takes the best.
He knew that you would never get well on earth again.
So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace Be Thine."
He then took you up to heaven with hands so gentle and kind.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you the day God called you home.
The family requests that memorials be sent to Israel Family Hospice House. The best memorial to Pearl would be that each of you who knew her call someone you love and tell them so.
