Max E. Akers

Died Nov. 19, 2002

Max E. Akers, 78, of Des Moines, died Nov. 19 from complications of cancer at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

He was born in Nevada. He served in WWII. He attended Drake University and was a graduate of the Univesity of Iowa. He was a school teacher in Seymour, Ankeny and Des Moines, who retired in 1985. He served on the Ankeny City Council and was first president of the Ankeny Golf and Country Club, which he helped establish in 1962. He enjoyed golf, fishing, big band music and poetry.

Survivors include his wife, Carol J. Akers of Des Moines; two sons, M. Steven Akers of Mission Hills, Kan., and Thomas L. Akers of Charleston, Ill.; his brother, Clark Akers of Calihan, Co.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cynthia B. Akers.

Memorial services were held Friday, Nov. 22, at Hamilton's Near Highland Memory Gardens, where burial of the cremains took place.
