Frederick T. (Fred) Poole, 63, assistant director of national affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation and a resident of this area since 1950, died at his home in Takoma Park Saturday of coronary artery disease.

Mr. Poole was born in Ames, Iowa. He earned varsity letters in football, track and basketball at Iowa State University, and later was elected to the all-time Iowa State football team. He had served as national president of the Cyclone Club, the sports booster organization of the university.

Mr. Poole earned a law degree at the University of Colorado after his graduation from Iowa State and practiced law briefly before entering the Army Air Corps in World War II. He served in Europe and held the rank of lieutenant colonel when he left the service in 1946.

He began in public relations that year in New York City with General Foods Corp. He moved to the Washington area in 1950 and worked for a public relations firm here until 1957, when he became assistant general counsel for the Association of Oil Pipelines. He operated his own public relations firm from 1962 until he joined the American Farm Bureau Federation in 1968.

Survivors include his wife, the former Jeanne Parsons, of the home in Takoma Park; a son, Frederick T. Jr., of POrtland, Ore., and a daughter, Clarinda E. Poole, of Washington.
