THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 7, 2006.

Esther Alberta Sanftner, 96, died March 4, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. She was a 35 year resident of Ames. She was born May 9, 1909, in Salem, N.J., to John A. and Alma L. (Pearson) Swanson of Sweden. She and her husband, the late Earl P. Sanftner, lived for many years in Swea City, where both graduated from Swea City High School, and where they were active in Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, baking and singing, and was a warm and generous friend and neighbor.

She is survived by one daughter, Jan (Maury) Elvekrog of Birmingham, Mich.; one son, Donald E. Sanftner of Ames; four grandchildren, Julie (John) Tillman, Eric (Jackie) Elvekrog, Kirsten (Alan Kurt) Elvekrog, and Jon (Allison) Elvekrog; and five great grand-children, Lauren Tillman; Jonathon Elvekrog; and Jack, Austen and Tenley Elvekrog.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Alice C. Shade, and one brother, Albert J. Swanson.
A memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Avenue, Ames. Burial will be in Harrison Township Cemetery in Swea City.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
