Clark W. Anderson, 84, died at home Wednesday, Feb. 22. He was a 44-year resident of Ames, serving the longest as the carpenter for the city of Ames. He retired in 1990. A private family ceremony will be at a later date in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Clark was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Norfolk, Neb., to David and Ruth Anderson. He was the oldest child of five. He graduated from Lead High School in Lead, S. D., and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy May 26, 1942. He served as a pharmacists mate second class in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1952, on the GI bill, he earned a degree in sociology and education from Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D. He married his wife of 31 years, Patricia May Shipton, July 29, 1948. They had three children: Lynn Dee, Troy and Cassie. Lynn and Troy died in childhood from cystic fibrosis. Clark's professions took him from teaching in New Mexico to construction until he settled in Ames, where he became employed by the city of Ames as a carpenter. He was a craftsman who could fix anything but also created shelving and beautiful pieces of furniture that may still be seen around the city offices.

He is survived by one daughter Cassie Wherry, son-in-law Mike and grandson Mitchell, all of Grinnell; three sisters, Sandy Mapel of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Charlotte Andersen of Centennial, Colo., and Evelyn Anderson of Portland, Ore.; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son and daughter, Lynn and Troy; his former wife Patricia; one sister, Betty Jane Anderson; one nephew; and his parents.
