Nathaniel Applegate was born in North Carolina in 1792 and married Elizabeth Smith who was born in Tennessee in 1795. They had one son, Hezekiah. Nathaniel and his family came to Indian Creek Township, Story County, Iowa, from Bureau County, Illinois, in 1856 and settled near Iowa Center. Nathaniel died in 1863 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery near Iowa Center.

Hezekiah, son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Smith Applegate, was born in Indiana about 1829. He married Jane Clark in 1849. They had one son, Marshall Morris Applegate, born in Story County, August 26, 1885. Marshall married Maude Bailey August 26, 1885. Both are buried buried in Nevada, Iowa Cemetery. Marshall and Clara Maude Bailey Applegate had one daughter, Lulu Francis, born June 16, 1892, at Perry, Iowa. Lulu married Artie Marshall Christy December 10, 1913. They are both buried at Center Grove Cemetery between Maxwell and Cambridge.
