DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
David N. Binkley, private, Company I, 168th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action at Hill 212, near Sergy, northeast of Chateau Thierry, France, July 28, 1918. He sought and obtained permission to go out in front of our lines and recover his corporal, who was lying severely wounded in the open. He crossed an open area that was swept for more than 50 yards by enemy machine guns, reached the corporal and carried him safely back into our lines. Later he was wounded, but refused to go to the aid station until his company had won its objective.

Residence at enlistment: 708 Northwestern Avenue, Ames, Iowa.
