From the October 25, 1917 Hawarden Independent:
Jacob Aurner, an old pioneer of Sioux county and a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home in Washington township, Tuesday, October 16th, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 18 days.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Ireton at l:3t Friday afternoon, Rev. Lumley preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was made in the cemetery at Alcester, S. D., beside the grave of his wife.
The deceased was born in Ohio Oct. 28, 1839. When a small child he moved with his parents to Illinois. In 1860 he was united in marriage with Miss Emily Jane Freshour. One daughter was born to this union. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. I, 12th Kansas volunteer Inf., and served two years and nine months in the momentous struggles of the Civil war. After the war he moved with his family to Illinois where on the March 12th, 1868, his wife passed away.
On Jan. 1, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Miller. In 1878 he moved to Sioux county where he has since made his home. He was one of the charter members of Launtz Post, G.A.R., of Ireton. He leaves to mourn his death one daughter, Mrs. Mary Whalen, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; also one brother, John Aurner of Hawarden, and one sister, Mrs. Luther Colvin of Kimball, S. D., besides many other relatives and friends.
In his death the community loses a good citizen, a kind neighbor and a true patriot. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved ones in their loss.
