From the Alton Democrat of Jun 22, 1901.
Also the Hawarden Independent of Jun 20, 1901 below.
Lightning played havoc in the neighborhood last saturday. It struck the house of W. A. Bret living a few miles east of town. It came down the floe and divided going along both side of the house breaking every window light in two window and killing Pearlie Blanche, the 12 year old daugther who was in the room alone at the time. Her clothes were torn into shreds and were burning when found by other members of the family. It was a sad blow to the family and neighbors. Pearlie was an extremely bright girl, sweet in her innocense and purity which drew her the love of her friends and companions. Besides a loving father and mother she leaves two sisters and two brothers to mourn her sudden death. The funeral was held at the Hawarden M. E. Church Sunday afternoon. Mr. Brest and family have the sympathy of the entire community.
(Pearlie Blanche Brest was born 4 Jan 1889 died 15 Jun 1901 buried Hawarden. Father was William Andrew Brest b. 14 Dec 1845 Penn. died 28 Aug 1924 Hawarden IA. Mother was Mary Jane Jackson Green born 1865 died 1955 Hawarden. Other children were Mary, Morris, Nora, Clarence, Gladys and Vera.)
