Mr. Peter Soodsma, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley.
A visitation with the family present will be held on Monday, February 10, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, February 11, at 10:30am, at the church with the Rev. Ben Wiersma and The Rev. Tim Ouwinga officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hull is in charge of arrangements.
Peter Edwin was born on October 2, 1937, on his parents’ farm north of Hull, the son of Henry and Anna (Klein) Soodsma. He was raised on the farm and attended country school, Hull Christian School, and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull.
On May 28, 1959, he was united in marriage to Helen Heynen at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. They made their home on a farm north of Hull, where they raised their four children. In 2005, Pete retired from farming and the couple moved into town.
Pete was a life-long member of the First Christian Reformed Church. He spent many years volunteering his time at Justice For All in Rock Valley, the Alpha Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and with Cursillo. He was also an active participant in the local Dunamis. In earlier years, he enjoyed playing volleyball, and more recently, hunting and fishing with his sons, and riding motorcycle. His retirement hobby was building Erector sets.
Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Helen, of Hull; his children and their spouses, Mark and Sherri Soodsma, of Custer, South Dakota; Brenda and Kevin Gunderson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Dan and Jennifer Soodsma, of Rock Valley ; thirteen grandchildren, Trisha, and her husband, Joel Huyser; Travis (Adrienne) Soodsma; Tanya Soodsma; Ashley, and her husband, Aaron Hoefert; Andrew Gunderson; Jordan Soodsma; Joshua Soodsma; Josalyn Soodsma; Jonah Soodsma; Lucas Soodsma, and his wife, C.J.; Ashayla Soodsma; Rashaylee Soodsma; and Shanelle Soodsma; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Robert and Sharon Soodsma, of Hull; a brother-in-law and his wife, George and Nancy Heynen, of Hull; and a sister-in-law, and her husband, Edie and Lane Bonnema, of Sioux Falls; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Soodsma.
Memorials will be given to Hull Christian School, Western Christian High School in Hull, and the Alpha Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
