Harlin E. Doorenbos, age 90, of Sheldon, Iowa and formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024, at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon. His Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon with Rev. Stephen Breen ~ officiating.

Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon with Military Rite by the graveside service by the McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 American Legion of Sheldon, Iowa

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Harlin Eugene Doorenbos, the son of Lawrence and Elsie (Schafer) Doorenbos was born April 13, 1934 on a farm south of Boyden, Iowa. He received his education and later graduated from Boyden High School in 1953. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and he served from 1953 and discharged in 1955. On February 2, 1962, he was united in marriage to Pearl Bowen in Sanborn, Iowa. The couple made their home in Sheldon where Harlin worked at the Farmers Feed and Supply in Boyden. He later worked at the DX service station in Sheldon and for 29 years worked at the Farmers Elevator in Boyden. He retired in 1996 and worked for several years parttime for the Farmers Elevator. His wife Pearl preceded him in death on September 6, 1981. The couple were making their home in Sheldon. On March 15, 1991, he was united in marriage to Magdalene (Maggie) Meyer and the couple made their home in Sioux Center. She preceded him in death on August 2, 2023 in Sioux Center. Harlin had made his home with his wife Maggie at the Friendly Horizons Care Center in Sioux Center. After her passing he moved to Sheldon and made his home at Fieldcrest Assisted Living and August of 2024, he moved to Senior Care in Sheldon. He passed away at Senior Care on Monday, October 21, 2024 reaching the age of 90 years, 6 months and 8 days.

While in Sheldon he was a member of the United Methodist Church and Sioux Center, he was a member of Cornerstone Church. He was a member of the American Legion of Sioux Center and he had a high honor to be with his son on the Honors Flight to Washington D.C. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. Harlin enjoyed bowling, fishing, camping, playing cards, board games and putting puzzles together. Harlin and Maggie spent their winter months for 14 years in Donna, Texas.

Harlin is survived by his children; Wanda Vos of Sheldon, Iowa; Kevin Doorenbos of Sheldon, Iowa and Illadene (Randy) Renken of Sheldon, Iowa also grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; Step children, Larry Meyer of Oakdale, Pennsylvania; Linda (Roger) Wissink of Orange City, Iowa; Eve Swanson of Iowa City, Iowa; Suzette (Bruce) Vonk of Sioux Center, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Sheila Meyer of Altoona, Iowa; two brothers, Glenn Doorenbos of Sibley, Iowa and Donald Doorenbos of Boyden, Iowa also other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Pearl and Maggie, his parents, Lawrence and Elsie; son-in-law, Gary Vos; step-son, Jeff Meyer; two brothers, Lester and Doug Doorenbos and two sisters, Lois Kuiper and Beverly Kruger.
