HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Evelyn M. Huenink, 97, of Hawarden, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Alcester Care and Rehab Center in Alcester, South Dakota.Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Rev. Steven Zwart officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Evelyn Mae Huenink was born May 24, 1927, in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Tony and Ruth (Mieras) Visser. She attended country grade school and graduated from Hawarden High School. She married Henry “Hank” Huenink February 25, 1947, and together they farmed near Hawarden.
Evelyn and Hank went on many mission trips in the states and did foster care for several children. She was a lifetime member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. She volunteered at the Hawarden Hospital Thrift Shop for many years and loved gardening and flowers. She made many quilts for birthdays, weddings, and for babies. She enjoyed “The Birthday Club” ladies with their games, food and fellowship. Every Friday night was game night, either Hand and Foot, Play Nine, or Rummikub, to name a few.
Henry passed away on January 9, 2010. Evelyn lived at home until she moved to Oakhill Assisted Living in March 2018. She loved it there! She made sure to tell everyone how much she loved everything they did for her. She moved to the Alcester Care and Rehab Center in August of 2024 until God called her home on September 25, 2024.
She is survived by her siblings, Betty (Tim) Jackes and Bill (Christy) Visser; her children, Jim and Deb Huenink, Kathy and Ben Robertson, Doreen and James Timmerman, and Loreen Huenink; grandkids, SueLynn (Phillip), Angela, Heidi (Dave), Aaron (Becca), Ryan, Sherry (Scott), Jen (Jeremy), Dale (Kelly), Davey (Jes), Taylor (Mikayla), and Katie (Jake); 38 great-grandkids; 33 great-great-grandkids; in-laws, Edna Prange, Pearl Weiskamp, and Evelyn Huenink; and special friends, Tres Vander Plas and Becky Kane.
Gone too soon were her husband, Henry “Hank”; daughter-in-law, Sue Huenink; sisters, Jean Wiseman and Helen Nobel; brother, Art Visser; granddaughter, Kim Hemmelrick; grandson-in-law, Phillip Counterman; and great-grandson, Myles Sorensen.
