Greving, Gladys (Mrs. Clarence Frederick) 1925-2024

Mrs. Gladys Greving, age 98, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Saturday, August 3, from 9:00am to 10:00am, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the church with the Rev. Scott Bonestroo officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Marie was born on October 2, 1925, in Hull, the daughter of John P. and Emma (Verrips) Van Wyk. She grew up on a farm south of Hull and attended country school and the Hull Public School. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Central College in Pella, where she met her future husband.

On June 2, 1948, she was united in marriage to Clarence Frederick Greving, in Hull. After earning her teaching degree, Gladys taught Home Economics in Fonda for a year until the couple moved to Holland, Michigan, where Clarence completed seminary. Their ministry took the couple to numerous places across the Midwest, including Newkirk, Iowa; Overisel, Michigan; and Hollandale, Minnesota. Eventually they settled in Alton, where Gladys taught Home Economics at Floyd Valley High School until retiring in 1986. In 1990, she and Clarence moved to a condo in Orange City, and in 2006, they became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community, also in Orange City. Clarence passed away on February 29, 2008, in Orange City, after more than 59 years of marriage.

Mrs. Greving loved entertaining family and friends in her home. She was a faithful and active member of Alton Reformed Church, and she was a continual prayer warrior for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, that they would know the Lord. In her later years, she enjoyed quilting, and each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have a quilt especially made for them.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Emalee and Lloyd Te Brink, of Alton; Warren and Jani Greving, of San Fransisco, California; and Julie and Phil Moss, of Mesquite, Nevada; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Greving, of Alton; fourteen grandchildren, Sarah, and her husband, Jason Hendel; Katie, and her husband, Luke Horkey; Tim Te Brink, and his wife, Kristen; Leslie Greving, and her boyfriend, J.D. Bomgaars; Luke Greving, and his wife, Maggie; Lana, and her husband, Travis Van Es; Zach Moss, and his wife, Diana; Abbi Moss, and her fiancé, Michael Brabham; Olivia Moss; Mickey, and her husband, Casey Conner; Brett Greving, and his wife, Hillary Baca; Justin Greving, and his partner, Esteben Beas; Robin Greving, and his wife, Sabrina Wang; and Graham Greving, and his wife, Marcella Griese; 22 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Anita Van Wyk, of Boise, Idaho; and Carol Van Wyk, of San Jose, California; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Greving; a great-grandson, Elijah Greving; two brothers, Kenneth Van Wyk and Norman Van Wyk; and a sister and her husband, Erma Jean and Jim Van Roekel.

Memorials will be directed to the Alton Reformed Church.
