Raymond Rutzen age 71 formerly of Ashton, IA died on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at his daughter’s home, rural Hospers, IA.

There will be no services.

Raymond John Rutzen was born on May 5, 1953, in Kennewick, WA, the son of Marvin and Elsie (Collier) Rutzen. He grew up in Rushmore, MN, and attended school in Worthington, MN. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for six years and was honorably discharged with the rank of 3rd Class Enginemen.

On February 17, 1973, he was united in marriage to Dawn L. May in Sibley, IA. During Ray’s Navy years, he lived in San Diego, CA, and moved around until settling in Ashton, IA in 1988. After fifty years of marriage, his wife Dawn passed away on March 10, 2023.

Ray worked as a truck driver for many years until he started working for Herbst Construction as a Bridge Superintendent until his retirement in June of 2023.

His hobbies included fishing on the Missouri River, hunting, and taking Dawn to the Casino. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ray was very crafty and loved to tinker in his garage. He will be greatly missed.

Ray is survived by three children, Tori (Chad) Redinius of Hospers, IA, Jason Rutzen of Rock Rapids, IA, and Ashley (Mark) Callenius of Hospers, IA; five grandchildren, Katlyn (Colin) Redinius, Shawn Rutzen, Caleb, Mason, and Hunter Callenius; three siblings, Rhonda Rutzen of Windom, MN, Robert (Jennifer) Rutzen of Manhattan, IL, and Renee Dayton of Antigo, WI; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dawn Rutzen; parents, Marvin and Elsie Rutzen; three siblings, Randy Rutzen, Ryan Rutzen, and Roxanne Rutzen; parents-in-law, Arthur and Lois May; and sister-in-law, Brenda Howard.
