“to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1

On June 9, 1925, our dear-to-be mom, grandma, great grandma, and great-great-grandma, Violet Haak, was born, the third child of thirteen children born to Mary and Ed Van Beek. She knew the delight of many playmates during her childhood. She attended a one room country schoolhouse through the eighth grade.

As a new teenager (13) she knew the sorrow of losing her older sister, Florence (16). As a young adult of nineteen, she dated and married her love, Army Private Peter Warren Haak, on July 6, 1944. She was born and married in her parent’s home near Westfield, North Dakota.

She knew sadness and fear when she had to see Peter sent off to World War II. During his service across the sea, she knew how to stay busy helping her mom and grandmothers during that time.

She knew happiness when Peter was welcomed back home, and the war was over. They settled on a farm near Hull, North Dakota. They started their lives together with Christ as the head of their home.

Together they were parents to five children, Marlene, Larry, Joan, Duane, and Malia. The years flew by, soon the second generation was a third generation and a fourth generation and a fifth generation. They moved in 1970 to Sioux Center, Iowa. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1994 and their theme was “Generations Adore Him”. There, Mom worked at Dordt College and Dad worked at EMW Groschopp.

They moved to Rock Valley, Iowa in their later years and while there they enjoyed being Foster Grandparents for the kids at Hope Haven shedding His Light. Dad passed away at the age of 81 on October 1, 2002.

Mom’s seasons of mourning were the passing of her parents, Ed and Mary; her husband, Peter; sisters, Florence Van Beek and Phyllis Haak; brothers, Gerald, Ernie, Ken, and Terry; son, Duane Haak; son-in-law, Jim Urwin; and great-granddaughter, Aydriana.

Mom’s seasons came and went, and her faith never wavered. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was her true point, her beauty, and her complete joy. God called her home on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. She would have been 99 this coming June 9.

Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Bernice, Carol, Angie, and Elaine; brothers, Melvin and Orlie; her children; her children’s children; her great grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchildren.
