Harold Boer, 86, of Sioux Center, IA, died Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Royale Meadows Care Center.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00PM, with the family present from 5-7PM Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Thursday at 10:00AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee officiating. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11:00AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Duane Tinklenberg officiating.

The Boer family prefers memorials to Sioux Center Christian School Foundation.

Harold Boer was born on May 14, 1929 to Raymond and Adrianna (Groeneweg) Boer in Hull, Iowa. He was raised on various farms at Hawarden, Hudson and Rock Valley. Harold graduated from the 8th grade at Rock Valley Christian School. After this, he began farming with his father. He continued farming until he entered the army in 1951 during the Korean War. He was first stationed in Fort Knox, KY, and received training in the motor pool. He was then stationed in Augsburg, Germany until he was honorably discharged in 1953. He also worked in the motor pool in Augsburg, and enjoyed traveling throughout Europe while on leave. He played on a traveling army softball team in Germany.

After his Army service, he resumed his farming career. Harold married Gertrude J. Geels on June 6, 1955 in Ireton, Iowa. Harold and Gert lived and farmed near Rock Valley for 19 years before moving to their current farm near Sioux Center in 1965, where he lived until the summer of 2015. He still planted and combined the crops at the age of 83. He enjoyed raising crops and feeding cattle, and had a cow/calf herd for 44 years, even after recovering from a severe stroke in December, 1995. He was talented at carpentry and fixing machinery.

Harold was a charter member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley, where he served as a deacon. He was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center for 51 years, where he served as an elder. Harold also served 9 years on the Farmers Coop Board, 3 years on the Sioux Center Christian School Board, and for 3 years on the Rural Water Board.

Harold enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball games of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching the baseball and basketball games of the Rozeboom boys. In addition, he liked listening to games on the radio and computer. He was still able to attend his granddaughters’ volleyball games in the 2015 season.

Harold is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Gert Boer of Sioux Center; his five children and their families:

Harold is also survived by his sister, Betty (Boer) De Boer, Rock Valley; sister-in-law Helen (Boer) Scholten of Rock Valley and special aunt, Francis (Groeneweg) Vanden Bosch and husband Tom, of Hull.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Peter Boer, Laverne Boer; brother-in-law, Oscar De Boer and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Bertha Geels.
