Gerrit Vonk, 70, longtime Sunnyside resident, died Sunday, December 5, at his home in Sunnyside, Washington.

Services were December 9 at the Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Burial was in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside.

Vonk was born July 2, 1929, at Sioux Center, the son of Ben and Jenny (Katje) Vonk. He spent his early years and received his education in Sioux Center.

He married Jennie Koedam June 12, 1951, at Rock Valley. The couple made their home in Sioux Center.

He entered the U. S. Army in 1952 and served until 1954. Following his military service, the couple continued to live in Sioux Center until 1972, when they moved to Lynden, Washington, and in 1983 to Sunnyside.

His wife died November 6, 1992. He had been a self-employed dairyman, farmer and worked in construction. He made Sunnyside his home until the time of his death. He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation.

Survivors include eight daughters, Patricia De Groot, Janet Martin, Sonja Weidenaar and Leah Spady, all of Lynden, Ruth den Hoed of Prosser, Washington, Mari den Hoed of Grandview, Washington, Beth Kroes of Sunnyside and Amy Smith of Seattle, Washington; one son, Tim Vonk of Lynden; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jeanette Feekes of Sun City, Arizona, Katherine Vande Kieft of Orange City, Gert Vande Berg and Goldie De Jager, both of Sioux Center, and Dorothy Van Bochove of Sun City; five brothers, Hank Vonk of Heron Lake. Minnesota; George Vonk. Pete Vonk and Gene Vonk, all of Sioux Center, and Ben Vonk of Mesa, Arizona.
