Richard Vermeer

Richard A. Vermeer, 72, of Greeley died Monday, Aug. 25, at North Colorado Medical Center, Greeley.

He was born June 1, 1931, in Orange City, Iowa, to Edward R. and Gertrude (Oordt) Vermeer.

As a small child, Mr. Vermeer moved with his family to Sioux Center, Iowa. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1948 and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he graduated from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa.

On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Lois F. Hubers in Orange City. They lived in North Platte, Neb., 1964-83, where he was a general agent for Kansas City Life Insurance Co. and also owned a used-auto rental business.

They moved to Grand Island, Neb., where he owned a vending business, “Mr. Pop.” He moved to Loveland in 1987 and retired from the vending business. He moved to Greeley in 2002.

Mr. Vermeer was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church and had been a member of the Loveland Mountain View Presbyterian Church and First United Presbyterian Church in Greeley.

His friends came from all walks of life and many considered him a mentor. He loved to make people laugh and enjoyed camping, fishing and family.

Survivors are his wife, Lois F. Vermeer of Greeley; four children, Marianne Vermeer Johnson of Richmond, Va., Dan Vermeer of Phoenix, Paul Vermeer of Gates, Ore., and Susan Vermeer of Denver; two sisters, Carolyn Rohlf of Humboldt, Iowa, and Glenda Seely of Loveland; two brothers, Vernon Vermeer of Aimes, Iowa, and Ethan Vermeer of Orange City; and six grandchildren. His parents are deceased.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Presbyterian Church, 1321 9th Ave., Greeley. Cremation. Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial gifts may be made to Medical Benevolent Foundation to be used for shipping medical supplies to Africa in care of Lois Vermeer, 2126 14th St., Greeley, CO 80631.
