ROCK VALLEY, IOWA ~ Muriel LeMonds, 95, of Rock Valley, Iowa, formerly of Doon, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Riverview Ridge Assisted Living of Rock Valley.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2024, at First Community Church of Hope in Doon, Iowa with Pastor Jim Sweers officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery of Doon. Visitation, with the family present, will be held Sunday, February 25, from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Muriel’s family prefers memorials be directed to the First Community Church of Hope in Doon.

Muriel Kathryn (Hoogeveen) LeMonds was born October 9, 1928 in Doon, Iowa to Henry and Clara (Bick) Hoogeveen. Muriel graduated from Doon High School in 1946. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (Now UNI), Cedar Falls, Iowa and Westmar College, LeMars, Iowa.

She taught for a time at a Country School. On January 7, 1948, she married Robert Vincent LeMonds. In 1950 Muriel and Vince purchased the Doon Locker Plant. Over the years they acquired the grocery store and their business became known as Vince’s Clover Farm. Muriel was a hard worker and continued to work at the grocery store into her 90’s.

She was a member of the First Community Church of Hope (Formerly Doon Congregational and First Methodist Church), a member of the Doon Women’s Club for over 65 years, the American Legion and various Card groups. She always had a large garden and supplied her family and friends with fresh produce. Along with being a fan of the Minnesota Twins baseball team and the Iowa Hawkeyes, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. Muriel loved playing games and watching game shows. She looked forward to Friday Bingo at RiverView Ridge.

Muriel lived most of her life in Doon, other than part of her childhood on the family farm south of Lester, Iowa until moving to RiverView Ridge Assisted Living in Rock Valley, Iowa in 2022.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Gwendolyn Ditzel; brothers, James Hoogeveen and Jack Hoogeveen; brother-in-law, Roger Ditzel; and sister-in-law, Delores Hoogeveen.

She is survived by her 5 children: Janet (Robert) Steenblock of Fremont, Nebraska, Eloise (Robert) DeKam, Robert “Bob” LeMonds, both of Doon, Marilyn (Brant) VandeKop of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Beverly (Darrell) Vande Vegte of Doon; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way, and 1 great-great grandchild with 2 on the way!; 2 sisters-in-law, Barbara Hoogeveen and Ivy Bolt; along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.
