Jean Alice was born on November 5, 1931, in Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit and Minnie (Voogd) Scholten. She was raised on the family farm near Boyden and attended the Hull Christian School and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull.

On August 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Fred De Jong at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Shortly after they were married, the couple moved to California while Fred served in the Marine Corps. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Northwest Iowa, where they raised their six children Gary, Larry, Marcia, Charlotte, Darrel, and Loren. Jean enjoyed being a wife, mother, homemaker, and bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Fred De Jong and Sons, Inc. In later years, she and Fred enjoyed traveling together and spent many winters in Arizona. Fred passed away on December 28, 2014, in Rock Valley, after more than 63 years of marriage.

Mrs. De Jong was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, and a member of the Hull American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Her greatest joy in life was her family, and she looked forward to being with them, especially when the great-grandchildren were there.
