Mr. Gilbert Aberson, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, February 2, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, February 3, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton.

Gilbert John was born on August 1, 1936, on his family’s farm south of Orange City, one of nine children born to Bert and Jennie (Geurink) Aberson. He grew up on the farm and attended a nearby country school.

On December 30, 1964, he was united in marriage to Thelma Brands, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Together they made their home and raised their family on the Aberson Family farm, where “Gib” lived for all 87 years of his life.

Gilbert was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as a deacon. He liked “shooting the breeze” with the men at the Alton Elevator and he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. When the grandkids were younger, they had fun with grandpa on sled rides behind his tractor and learning to drive his pickup truck; when they got older, Gib purchased an ATV so they could drive on the country roads when they came to visit. He and Thelma enjoyed traveling on numerous bus tours and being able to travel to Disney World in Florida with the family to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Thelma passed away on June 23, 2023, after more than 58 years of marriage.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses, Kevin and Kim Aberson, of Elgin, Illinois; Kathy and Thomas Pressey, of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Kurt and Kelli Aberson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Sydney Pressey, Connor Pressey, Lexi Pressey, Riley Pressey, Paige Aberson, and Dawson Aberson; three sisters, Betty Engeltjes, of Leota, Minnesota; Jeane Van Veldhuizen, of Sanborn; and Esther Mae Van Den Berg, of Rock Valley; a brother and his wife, William and Darlene Aberson, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Gert Aberson, of Sioux Center; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters and their spouses, Shirl and Ken Van Veldhuizen, Joan and Jake Dykstra, and Wilmina and Nick Cleveringa; a brother, John Aberson; and three brothers-in-law, Bernie Engeltjes, Gene Van Veldhuizen, and Darrell Van Den Berg.

Memorials will be given to Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
