Rita R. Bierwirth, 84, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Thursday.

Rita Rae Gaul was born on August 8, 1939, in Alton, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Marie (Reith) Gaul, Sr. She grew up and attended school in the Alton area and later moved to Le Mars, Iowa during her junior year of high school. She graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School in 1957. Her younger years were spent waitressing at Michalosky’s Steak House, the Biltmore Buffet and Hammer’s Restaurant.

On September 19, 1966, Rita and Bud Bierwirth were united in marriage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in Struble and later Le Mars. Rita and Bud also spent two years in Colorado while Bud served in the Army. They were blessed with a daughter, Kimberly Ann. Rita then went to work at K-Products and worked there for 30 years, retiring in 1980.

Rita was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She spent summers fishing at their home in Pickstown, South Dakota and enjoyed planting flowers each spring. Most important to Rita was her family.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 57 years, Carroll “Bud” Bierwirth, a daughter, Kimberly (Paul Lind) Bierwirth all of Le Mars, IA; a brother, Martin (Jupe) Gaul Jr. of Warsaw, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Joyce Kruse of Mapleton, IA and Delores Boysen of Le Mars, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Marie Gaul, Sr.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carl and Marie Bierwirth, brothers, Marvin and Doug Gaul; a sister, Marilyn Smith; brothers-in-law, John Boysen and Marvin Kruse; a nephew, Mike Kruse; a niece, Sandy Goberson; and several aunts and uncles.
