Nic Penning died at this home near Granville Saturday Sep 16th 1911 of cancer of the stomach after an illness of many weeks. He had been ill since the first of May and though at times he suffered a great deal he never once complained. Deceased was born at Leltx, Luxemburg Europe April 5th 1837. He came to the US Apr 9th of 1866 making his home on a farm near Chicago where he lived a short while. He moved from there to Dubuque and from there to Caledonia Mn where on Sep 22, 1872 he was untied in marriage to Miss Margaret Schutz. This union was blessed with eight children seven of whom survive, Mrs. Fred Gerst, one of the daughters having died two years ago. In 1874 Mrs. and Mrs. Penning and two children came to Sioux County and for sic years occupied a farm one mile south of Hospers. The family then moved onto a farm three miles north of Granville where they have since resided. Mr. Penning was on of Sioux County’s pioneers and during his residence of thirty seven years he made many dear friends. He was a good husband an a kind father and successful as a farmer, owning at the time of his death about 700 acres of Sioux County Land. Deceased is survived by four daughters and three sons – Mrs. John Hoffmann of Bridgewater SD. Mrs. John Heinrici and Mrs. Henry Moos of Alton and George, John Diminic, and Catherine all of Granville. He is also survived by one brother, Tony Penning, of Paris France.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday from St. Jospeh’s Catholic church of Granville of whish deceased was a member and the services were conducted by Rev. Father Dries of Hospers. Interment was made in St. Joseph’s cemetery at Granville. Attendees listed.
