Lucille Joane Brotherton 11/4/1938 – 10/31/2023
Grief is the Price We Pay for Love
Lucille was born at home in Alton, Iowa, to Arthur G. Pluim and Nancy Langstraat Pluim. She lived her early years in and around Sioux Center, Iowa. From there, she settled for a while in the Iowa City, Iowa area, where she worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospital and Clinics. She rose through the ranks through 35 years of hard work, dedication, and training, becoming an Administrative Officer before she retired.
She was proud of her Dutch heritage and to call herself a Hawkeye.
She once calculated all the homes she had throughout her life, and it was over 40. She could recount each and every one. However, she had lived in her home in St. Augustine for the last 28 years. While here, she found a church home at her beloved Memorial Presbyterian, where she served as a deacon.
Besides her church, she loved her family, many friends, and working in her yard. She had too many flower types to count, but they included dune daisies, various roses, iris, ruella [Mexican petunia, for Monarch butterflies], walking iris, night blooming jasmine, purple trumpets, amaryllis, sky vine, azaleas, and plumbago.
She leaves many people to grieve for her besides her dear friends: two sisters –Tracy DeBoom and Nancy [Roger] Visser; two children – Mary [Martin] Neaton and Chad [Lori] Brotherton; six grandchildren – Davette, Keith, Michelle, Julian, Michael, and Louis; and three great grandchildren – Amiel, Cecily, and Anastasia.
The Memorial Service will be at Memorial Presbyterian Church, Chapel, Thursday, November 16, 2023, 10:00 a.m.
