Hawarden Independent of Dec 28, 1911
Mrs. J. B. Coates laid to Rest Last Friday
Had been a resident of this vicinity for many years and was esteemed by all
The funeral of Mrs. J. B. Coates was held from the M. E. Church last Friday afternoon and the services were conducted by Rev. H. C. Nissen, pastor of the church. The large concourse of friends who gathered at the church spoke in terms which can not be expressed in words of the high esteem in which this good woman was held in this community when in life.

Mary J. Howell was born May 14, 1860 in LaFayette county, WI. After growing to womanhood in WI, she came to Iowa in the years 1883. She was united in marriage with J. B. Coates at Marcus, Cherokee county, this state, Jan 4, 1884. To this union one daughter, Ethel was born. She came with her husband to Hawarden in the year 1885 and has made this her home since that date. She united with the church in her sixteenth years and has ever lived a conscientious and Christian life. About one years ago her health became impaired, and gradually she grew weaker day by day. Since Dec. 15th she had been bedfast, passing peacefully away on the evening of Dec 20th. During her long suffering she never complained, but was ever helpful, ever mindful of the welfare of others.

She leaves to mourn, a husband and daughter, besides three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. J. r. Willimas of Mason city, R. B. and J. J. Howell of Auerila, A. r. Howell of Hazel Green WI, Mrs. W. T. Brown of Plattsville WI, W. A. Howell of Sioux City and Miss Mattie R. Howell of Hawarden. All but the brother and sister residing in Wisconsin were present at the funeral.
