Mark Todd was born on December 14, 1958, in Audubon, Iowa, the son of Maynard Charles and Rose Irene (Sorensen) Madsen. Following graduation from Audubon High School, he enrolled at Northwest Iowa Community College, where he got more than he bargained for. In addition to getting an ag degree, he met his future wife, Cheryl Mae Kleinwolterink.

On April 19, 1980, Mark and Cheryl were united in marriage in Sheldon. They made their home in Hull, where he worked as a farm hand before starting a more permanent job at Demco, in Boyden. He worked there for 29 years. Most recently, Mark was employed by Walmart in Sioux Center. For the past 12 years, patrons could find him doing his best to keep the produce section looking full and fresh. He enjoyed greeting and teasing shoppers and never failed to put a smile on the faces of others.

His grit and determination have been evident throughout his entire life, but he persevered through some challenging medical issues including surviving a 25-foot fall, an aortic dissection, and many medical complications that followed. This fortitude allowed him the opportunity to meet and positively impact each of his four cherished grandchildren.

Mark was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull, where he enjoyed attending the Men’s Bible Study. He also volunteered at the Hull Food Pantry in his spare time. Mark had a passion and knack for growing flowers and vegetables in his garden and took great care of the goldfish he had in his pond, even through the winter. His grandchildren were a great source of joy to him and he loved being able to pick them up from school every day.

Survivors include his wife of more than 43 years, Cheryl, of Hull; a son and a daughter, Tony Madsen, and his wife, Abby; and Ashley Madsen, all of Hull; four grandchildren, Aiden, Ashton, Addalee, and Aliza Madsen; his mother, Rose Madsen, of Audubon; a brother and his wife, Mike and Eileen Madsen, of Garner; two sisters and their husbands, Julie and Gary Vais, of Exira; and Jill and Brent Madsen, of Elk Horn; Cheryl’s siblings and their spouses, Marsha and Larry Sterk, of Sheldon; Brian and Kathy Kleinwolterink, of Hull; John and Lisa Kleinwolterink, of Morris, Minnesota; and Keith and Kristin Kleinwolterink, of Sheldon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by Cheryl’s parents, Marvin “Jack” and Alyna Kleinwolterink; and her stepmother, Nell Kleinwolterink.

Memorials will be given to the American Heart Association and the Hull Food Pantry.
